ROWAN COUNTY, NC – Are you looking for an opportunity to support local schools and students? This month, Communities in Schools (CIS) of Rowan, a local non-profit, is giving local communities a chance to directly contribute to the success of the school-aged generation.
Rowan Public Library is once again partnering with CIS to support the latter’s annual school supply drive! Through August 31, members of the community are welcome to drop off new and unused school supplies at any of RPL’s four branches: RPL Headquarters in Salisbury, RPL East in Rockwell, RPL South in China Grove, or RPL West in Cleveland. Supplies donated at RPL Headquarters and RPL East will be showcased in the public display cases as space allows.
A variety of school supplies are needed including backpacks, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, scissors, folders and copy paper. School supplies must be in new and unused condition.
“Local students visit all of RPL’s locations every day, and staff see first-hand the impact of their having (or not having) adequate school supplies,” said Library Services Manager Laurie Lyda. “This supply drive gives CIS the ability to provide for as many local students as donations allow, ensuring they have the tools that schoolwork requires. What might just be a colorful spiral notebook to us may provide confidence in notebook form to a student who now has the means to take notes all semester and ace their exams.”
“It also helps that, for many, a supply drive is a low-impact way to serve the community: like any drive, RPL welcomes whatever people can donate – whether that’s one pack of new pencils or a bulk order of them! Each donation carries a very real, human connection that transcends monetary value,” said Lyda.
RPL Director Melissa J. Oleen initiated this now-annual campaign. “Staff look for us to roll out the promotional materials for this now,” said Lyda. “It provides RPL another option to bring families into our branches to learn how to best access the perks of their library cards. After all, on top of countless reading materials to choose from, RPL also offers homework help for all ages, literacy support, career resources, healthy living, and more.”
Anyone who doesn’t yet have the master key of school tools – a public library card – is encouraged to visit any RPL branch and sign everyone up for a library card or make updates to existing accounts. Children aged seventeen and under must have a parent or legal guardian with them to get a library card as their signature is required on the registration form.
